Our bodies are naturally designed to breathe through the nose, which filters, warms, and humidifies the air we inhale. Ideally, breathing should be silent and effortless. However, mouth breathing is a habit that can lead to a range of concerning health issues, including:

  • Swollen Tonsils and Adenoids: Chronic mouth breathing can contribute to inflammation and swelling.
  • Increased Allergy Symptoms: Without the filtering function of the nose, allergens have an easier path into the body.
  • Frequent Illness: Mouth breathing bypasses the nose’s defense mechanisms, making us more susceptible to colds and other infections.

What to Do If You’re Struggling to Breathe Through Your Nose

If nasal congestion is making it hard to breathe through your nose, consider trying this Buteyko Breathing technique, which is specifically designed to help open nasal passages.

If you feel that your nose has excess mucus, try the Two-Blow Method.

  • Gently blow your nose on one side, then the other, to clear large blockages.
  • Use a nasal saline spray or something like XClear Nasal Spray. Spray in each nostril while sniffing gently to avoid it going too deep into the throat. You can also try one or two drops in each nostril and allow to sit in the now fo 30-60 seconds
  • Gently blow each side of the nose again.

If congestion persists two weeks or more, allergies might be the culprit. A visit to an ENT or allergist can help determine if short-term nasal sprays like Flonase may help.

Retraining for Healthier Breathing

Why Mouth Breathing Matters to Your Dentist

Mouth breathing doesn’t just affect your health; it can impact dental care, too. Children who breathe through their mouths often experience underdeveloped jaws and may require orthodontics later on. Nasal breathing during dental appointments can make treatment easier and more comfortable.
